RICHMOND, Va. (Vegan AF) - President Donald Trump will soon order that slaughterhouses in the U.S. remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Reuters. Trump is expected to sign an executive order using the Defense Production Act to mandate which would require the processing plants continue to function.
More than 6,500 meat and food-processing workers have been infected with or exposed to the new coronavirus, and 20 have died, the country’s largest meatpacking union, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), said on Tuesday.
Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA, is strongly against Trump's move to keep these slaughterhouses open.
“For the sake of human health and on behalf of the animals destined to be slaughtered and the migrant and other workers who are treated like scum in these slaughterhouses and whose families are more at risk than in almost any other job, PETA asks the nation to rise up and shout a resounding ‘no’ to keeping slaughterhouses open,” Newkirk said.
“We stand ready and willing to help anyone who would like to make the transition to a vegan way of life.”
