(Vegan AF) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Canadian government will invest $100 million in their vegan protein sector. The funds will go to support Merit Functional Foods in Winnipeg. This Canadian-based company produces eco-friendly, plant-based proteins.
“As people around the world start eating more plant-based products, we have an opportunity to bring together Canadian innovation and Canadian crops and a chance to create good, well-paying jobs,” Trudeau said.
“Standing up for hard-working farmers, creating good jobs, setting up Canada for success on the world stage—these are things that our government will always get behind”, he continued.
Merit will use the funds to build a state of the art 94,000-square foot production facility which will process yellow peas and canola seed. Yellow peas are an essential ingredient in Beyond Meat's burgers and other plant-based foods. Canola seed is another viable source of clean, plant-based protein which is growing in popularity.
